Talking EHS, Episode 2: The Changing Face of the Safety Profession

Sept. 15, 2022
EHS Today's editors share their thoughts on some of the most interesting sessions at the recent ASSP Safety22 show, and offer their insights on where the safety profession is headed.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Safety22 show drew more than 4,100 attendees to Chicago's McCormick Place, demonstrating that safety professionals are indeed ready to gather together again in person to network, share best practices and learn from their peers how best to protect their workers and workplaces. In this Talking EHS podcast, EHS Today's Dave Blanchard and Nicole Stempak weigh in on the trends and topics that seemed to be uppermost on the minds of safety practitioners at the show.

Employee engagement was one of the main themes of the show, and certainly the role of safety professionals in creating and sustaining diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace was mentioned frequently. As Monique Parker, VP of EHS at Piedmont Lithium, put it, diversity creates a healthy workforce, equity increases employee retention, and inclusion decreases workplace stress.

You'll also hear about Doug Parker's post-COVID plans for OSHA, such as a focus on heat-related hazardsYou'll be challenged by consultant Pam Walaski's question: Are you ready to lead safety differently? And you'll even hear how you can learn to lead like Lasso, as in Ted Lasso, the fictional but inspiring coach from the Emmy-winning TV show. All this and more in this latest edition of Talking EHS.
